In just the last year, Phoenix inmate Rocky Marquez has successfully escaped the confines of two different county jails. The first instance occurred in a Phoenix prison nine months ago but more recently, Marquez walked out of a county jail in Detroit undetected last month after being apprehended for his Phoenix escape. Reports were released stating that the man was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Mexico and is being taken back to Phoenix where he will face trial on drug charges on top of charges of jail escape and alleged fraud, forgery, and perjury.
Authorities say that Marquez escaped the Wayne County jail in Michigan by persuading a fellow inmate to exchanged identity bracelets with him. He was apprehended in Detroit in late January after being found hiding out at a home in the city where some of his family members live after being on the run from authorities for eight months. Just ten days later, he was found missing from the Wayne County jail where he was waiting to be transferred back to Phoenix. Police reports state that no one from the jail staff in Detroit even noticed he was missing until days after he actually left. It is stated that similar methods of identity theft were used for his initial escape from the Phoenix prison.
The nine-month manhunt for Marquez ended with his Mexico arrest. Authorities are hopeful that this will be the last time they have to apprehend the man, whose escapes have added a multitude of charges to his initial drug charges. He is being taken brought back to Phoenix where he will await his trial and sentencing. The Marshals Service found the inmate who assisted in Marquez's escape from Wayne County and charging him with assisting an inmate's escape.
Marquez's actions have taken what were initially drug charges and expanded them to include a multitude of other infractions. There is no word yet when his trial will begin.
