About Ecstasy, Otherwise Known as MDMA
Methylendedioxymethylamphetamine (MDMA), also known as "ecstasy," "X," or "XTC," is known for increasing a sense of intimacy and diminishing anxiety, and can induce euphoria and mild psychedelia. Recreationally, ecstasy is known as a club drug and is frequently used at house parties, raves, and music festivals. People often take ecstasy with LSD, mushrooms and marijuana.
In the United States, ecstasy is a Schedule I drug, joining a class of drugs with no medical use and a high potential for abuse. Internationally, it is a Schedule I drug under the Convention of Psychotropic Substances.
What Are the Consequences?
In Arizona, ecstasy is considered a "dangerous drug." The penalties for dangerous drugs (any amount), including ecstasy are covered under A.R.S. § 13-3407, which are as follows:
- Possession or use – Class 4 felony
- Possession for sale – Class 2 felony
- Manufacturing – Class 2 felony
- Administering – Class 2 felony
- Transporting or importing, Class 2 felony
The terms of imprisonment for a Class 2 felony are 3 to 12.5 years, and for a Class 4 felony, 1 to 3.75 years. A conviction for an offense involving ecstasy may also include fines, mandatory drug testing, and community service.
